KO BOXING NEWS

Former Heavyweight Champion of the World Trevor Brebick will be putting his Canadian Heavyweight title on the line against Nanaimo's Shane Sutcliffe on May 26th at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, BC, Canada.  Berbick last won the title from Sutcliffe with a TKO at 0:44 of the 12th round.  That night the 45 year old Jamaican born native of Montreal (48-11-1, 33 KO's) regained the same title he first won back in in 1979.

Berbick has fought some of the greatest fighters in history including Muhammed Ali, Mike Tyson and Larry Holmes.  Berbick is an intelligent fighter with good physical strength, boxing skills, and knockout power.  He has been fighting professionally for 23 years and has been boxing longer than Sutcliffe has been alive.  Berbick has fought a total of 29 World Championship rounds.  He won the Heavyweight Championship with a 12 round unanimous decision against defending champion Pinklon Thomas (26-0-1).  The final scorecards read: 115-114, 115-113, and 115-113.

Berbick had a successful amateur career and represented Jamaica at the 1976 Olympics, losing in the second round to a Romanian fighter.

Berbick's opponent on May 26th, former Canadian Heavyweight Champion Shane Sutcliffe will be fighting for the first time since being KO'd in the 2nd round by top heavyweight contender David Tua.  Sutcliffe is a physically imposing heavyweight who can knock opponents out with either hand.  One of Sutcliffe's better known victims was former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World, Leon Spinks.

May 26th proves to be an important evening for Vancouver fight fans.  The Berbick-Sutcliffe fight will be the first major fight held in Vancouver in many years.  The fight is being promoted by Gerry Gionco of Gionco's Sportsworld.
