MOORER AND IBEABUCHI BOTH IN MENTAL HOSPITAL KO BOXING NEWS One former Heavyweight Champion and another future hopeful have both ended up in mental hospitals. Former Heavyweight Champion Michael Moorer was taken to a mental hospital Monday after he threatened to kill himself during an argument with his girlfriend while former Heavyweight contender Ike Ibeabuchi was sent to a state mental health facility before facing charges he sexually assaulted an outcall dancer who was sent to his hotel room. The two-time champion Michael Moorer had been drinking at a friend's house before he went home and started an argument with his girlfriend. Moorer went on to put a handgun to his head and told her he wanted to "end it". When officers arrived, Moorer was about to drive away on his motorcycle. He told police that he fired a shot in the house and wished to commit suicide. Moorer, 32, was taken to South County Mental Health Center for evaluation. The 26 year old Ibeabuchi who has a record of 20-0 with 15 knockouts was ranked No. 2 by the iBF when he was arrested. Over Ibeabuchi's objections, a judge ruled that he should be sent to a state facility for mentally ill offenders until doctors determine whether he is competent to stand trial. The ruling came late Wednesday after three doctors interviewed Ibeabuchi to see if he understood the charges against him. Ibeabuchi at first refused to acknowledge the judge in the courtroom but eventually nodded his head when asked if he would agree to be interviewed by the doctors. Dr. Thomas Bittker told the courtroom that two hours of interviewing showed that Ibeabuchi has an overwhelmingly narcissistic personality that prevents him from perceiving others' points of view. He said the boxer has some paranoia and does not grasp the relationship between behaviour and consequences. Ibeabuchi was quoted as saying "My life is already messed up, and I don't care which way it goes from now on". |
