EXCLUSIVE
INTERVIEW WITH
CLIFF "THE BLACK RHINO" ETIENNE

04/12/2000

KO: Where did you learn to box?

CE: I learned to box in prison.

KO: And how old were you when you started?

CE: I got locked up when I was 18, and I started boxing at about 20.

KO: When did you know you wanted to become a professional fighter?

CE: The first time I put the gloves on.

KO: Where you a quick learner?

CE: Yep.

KO: How would you describe your fighting style?

CE: I guess like my nickname, I keep on coming.

KO: I've heard that you have an extremely large work rate.

CE: Yes I do.

KO: Would you say you're a power puncher?

CE: Yes I am.

KO: How is working with Don Turner?

CE: It's good we've got Don Turner and JC Davis so that's like 80 years of boxing, so its good.

KO: Do you believe your style has made it hard for you to find quality opponents?

CE: Yeah because a lot of the Heavyweights don't like to fight, they like their space.  but my thing is to take away their space and make them fight at my pace.

KO: You had 12 name opponents or unbeaten prospects turn you down, who did that include?

CE: Yeah like Obed Sullivan, I don't really remember who the others were, there's a whole list of them.

KO: You're currently training with Michael Grant, how has that been?

CE: It's good because there's that championship mentality at the camp.

KO: You're fighting highly regarded prospect Lamon Brewster on the debut of KO Nation, how important do you see this fight being for your career?

CE: Well this is it, it's really the most important fight of my life.  I know he's talking a lot of stuff about me trying to make a run for the title at 30.  But that's ok, I'm not the kind of person to talk a lot of stuff before the fight so I'm not gonna get  into that.

KO: How do you picture the fight going on May 6th?

CE: Me winning.  I know I'm gonna win.  I'm confident.

KO: What would you say is next after a victory over Brewster?

CE: I can't look past this fight, it's my main focus.  I'm in camp right now, I'm not with my wife, I'm not around my friends, I'm here in camp and I'm taking everything I'm giving, all of my sacrafices, all the work that I'm doing and all the hurting that I'm doing.  I'm gonna take it out on somebody.  And he's gonna be the first one.

KO: Where do you believe you are in the Heavyweight division right now?

CE: Right now I guess I'm in obscurity.  But that's no problem for me because I'm mature enough to know that I've got to be patient.  And that's what I am, I'm being patient.  My time will come and I've just got to be ready when it comes.

KO: If you do become the Heavyweight Champion, what kind of champ will you be?

CE: The kind of person that I am now, still humble.  Still giving praise to God.  You know, I'll fight anybody.

KO: Do you have any final comments about the fight?

CE: May the best man win.
